As far as regular-season basketball games go, there might not be higher stakes than in Sunday’s game between Big Ten rivals Michigan and Ohio State.
The Wolverines and Buckeyes, ranked third and fourth in the latest AP Top 25 poll, respectively, are both aiming for the Big Ten’s regular-season championship and earn the top seed for the conference tournament in March. Moreover, both will try to secure a No. 1 seed in the 2021 NCAA Tournament; a win over a top-five program late in the season will go a long way in securing that status.
Michigan (15-1, 10-1 Big Ten) is on a two-game win streak over No. 21 Wisconsin and Rutgers after missing five consecutive games because of the COVID-19 pandemic. That includes a top-10 meeting with Illinois, which is also in the running for Big Ten supremacy. Meanwhile, Ohio State (18-4, 12-4 Big Ten) is on a seven-game win streak that includes ranked wins over Rutgers — No. 15 at the time — No. 21 Wisconsin and No. 5 Illinois.
Key players for Michigan in Sunday’s game include Isaiah Livers (15 points, 6.1 rebounds, 2.2 assists per game); Hunter Dickinson (14.9 ppg, 7.7 rpg); and Franz Wagner (12.3 points per game, 6.7 apg, 2.9 apg). For Ohio State, those players are Duane Washington (14.6 ppg, 2.9 rpg, 3.0 apg); E.J. Liddell (15.1 ppg, 6.7 rpg, 1.2 apg); and Justice Sueing (10.7 ppg, 5.8 rpg, 2.0 apg).
Will Livers, Dickinson and Wagner help second-year coach Juwan Howard to his first victory as a coach over the Buckeyes? Or will Washington, Liddell and Sueing keep Chris Holtmann undefeated against his Wolverines counterpart? Only one way to find out.
