Six teachers recognized as G-PISD’s 2021 Teachers of the Year

Gregory-Portland ISD held its annual Teacher of the Year awards ceremony Thursday recognizing six educators from the each campus and two representing the district.

The six honorees included physical education coach Kayla Knowlton of W.C. Andrews Elementary; kindergarten teacher Peggy Hamrick of T.M. Clark Elementary; kindergarten teacher Amy Winckler of S.F. Austin Elementary; first grade teacher Tiffany Seay of East Cliff Elementary; sixth grade social studies teacher Kory Baker of G-P Middle School; and STEM teacher Jonathan Turner of G-P High School.

Hamrick and Turner were the two representing their district for elementary and secondary schools.

Kory Baker (center) won Teacher of the Year for G-P Middle School on Thursday, April 29, 2021.

Baker, who has been teaching for eight years, said it is a huge honor to be recognized so early in her career.

“According to my students, I was recommended because they have fun while learning and most of the time they aren’t even aware that they are learning,” Baker said. “I am able to lead students and faculty. I am always self-reflecting, how can I do it better. Always making sure that what I am providing for the students is my very best.”
