MCALLEN, TEXAS – South Texas College in partnership with The Mission Economic Development Authority (MEDA) invites permanent residents of the City of Mission who are interested in furthering their education to apply for this year’s MEDA scholarship.

By alleviating some of the financial burden off students and families with the scholarship, STC and the City of Mission hope to increase a student’s chances of matriculating, and ultimately ensure that they have greater success in college.

If eligible, scholarship recipients can receive up to $3,200 to help pay for their education at South Texas College.

“At South Texas College, we believe that students should not feel burdened by finances while pursuing their education,” said Judy Martinez, STC Coordinator of Scholarships. “We encourage residents of the City of Mission to apply because opportunities like the MEDA scholarship have already made college possible for many students.

“It is our hope that removing some of the financial burden off students and their families, will inspire Mission residents to pursue higher education, to have greater success academically, and to ultimately become graduates of South Texas College,” Martinez said.

The STC Board of Trustees approved and authorized the acceptance of the MEDA Scholarship on Aug. 29, 2012, which established a trust of $3 million with funds to be used to establish and offer scholarships.

The scholarship was first awarded in the fall of 2013, and since then 561 students have benefited from the scholarship with a total of $1,052,550 awarded to date. Over 397 MEDA scholarship recipients have received their degree or certificate from South Texas College.

To be eligible, students must be a U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident, must be a permanent resident of the City of Mission, have completed one semester at STC with a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher, must have a high school diploma or GED, and be enrolled at least part-time at the college.

Awards are determined by semester enrollment, and the scholarship is renewable as long as students meet continued eligibility requirement. Recipients may receive up to $3,200 in scholarship funds.
