Hidalgo County community members can register to vote at a festive event at Edinburg, Texas H-E-B Park on Saturday evening, September 18th.
“Party at H-E-B- Park” will enable visitors to register at an entertaining bash for themselves and their families. The event will feature a raffle with prizes, free snacks, and inflatable arcade games for kids. English and Spanish-speaking volunteers will be on hand to make the registration process fast and easy.
“For busy, working families, finding time to register while looking after their kids can be a challenge,” said Sophia DeLoretto-Chudy, Campaign Manager, Good Deed Corps. “We’re offering an evening of fun activities so the vital act of voter registration will feel like a celebration instead of a red tape obstacle.”
The event is co-organized by the nonprofit Good Deed Corps, the League of Women Voters of the Rio Grande Valley, AACT Now, and Rideshare2Vote Aware. Resources from the nonprofit VoteRiders will be available for individuals to learn more about voter ID requirements in Texas and about how to contact VoteRiders for free ID assistance. AACT Now is currently proposing a Hidalgo county proclamation to designate September as “Valley Voter Awareness Month.” Carlos Martinez, AACT Executive Director, is leading that effort.
Edinburg is the second-largest city in Hidalgo County. Like other cities in the Rio Grande Valley, voter registration trails other parts of the state.
“Voters in the Rio Grande Valley often aren’t approached about registering until just several weeks before elections. It’s imperative we engage them in the process much sooner,” DeLoretto-Chudy noted. “Texas isn’t a red or blue state, but a voter suppressed state.”
The nonpartisan voter registration event takes place from 6 pm – 9 pm at H-E-B Park at 1616 S. Raul Longoria Road, #9169, Edinburg 78542.
