What a way to send fans off to the October international break: Two of the favorites for the English Premier League title will go head to head in Matchday 7, as Liverpool (14 points) welcomes reigning champion Manchester City (13 points) to Anfield Road in the big match of the weekend.
Both teams could move to the top of the Premier League table with a victory (Man City needs to win by more than a goal). Liverpool (4-0-2) is the last remaining undefeated team this season, while Manchester City (4-1-1) has allowed the fewest goals in the league so far. Its lone goal conceded was Tottenham’s game-winner in the opening match of the campaign.
The two clubs were in action on the road in midweek Champions League group stage matches, but they came away with very different results. Liverpool pounded Porto 5-1, while Man City were defeated 2-0 at PSG in one of the most anticipated matches of the round. Pep Guardiola’s men played well, but missed some chances in front of goal, raising the usual questions about their lack of a pure striker.
Sporting News will follow the match live and providing score updates, commentary and highlights as they happen:

(All times Eastern)
44th min.: It’s Ederson’s turn to pick out Foden down the left flank, but again nothing comes of it.
41st min.: Pep Guardiola will not be able to avoid questions about the lack of a pure forward. Jack Grealish’s runs in the box are not conducive to City’s crosses. Man City continues to attack and the danger for Liverpool is increasing by the minute.
38th min.: Another ball into Foden down the left flank. No Milner to stop him. But his cross doesn’t lead to a clear chance. Liverpool survive.
34th min.: Man City chance. De Bruyne with the diving header at the far post but he misses the target. Good chance for Man City.
32nd min.: Looks like a penalty for Man City. James Milner is late with his tackle on Phil Foden on the edge of the box. Nothing given by the referee. Foden has space on the left and he’s causing Liverpool issues with his runs. It’s no wonder Jack Grealish is playing central and Foden is wide.
26th min.: Ruben Dias slips while challenging Diogo Jota and he brings him down 40-45 yards from goal and picks up a yellow card. Nothing comes of the free kick.
24th min.: Joao Cancelo with a foray down the left and he feeds Kevin De Bruyne who shoots from a tough angle and the ball goes across the face of goal.
21st min.: What a play Bernardo Silva!! He twisted, spun and dribbled past 5-6 players before feeding Phil Foden, but Alisson comes off his line to stuff him. Foden couldn’t chip him. Best chance of the game so far.
And that’s why Bernardo was nicknamed “Bubblegum” as a kid #MCFC

18th min.: Alisson’s goalkeeper distribution turns into a giveaway in his own half and Man City wins a corner. Nothing comes of it.
13th min.: It’s been all Liverpool early. The rare advances by Man City have been misplayed. Phil Foden is playing wide left and Jack Grealish is highest player for Man City as the false nine.
7th min.: Beautiful passing buildup by Liverpool leads to a corner. Van Dijk nearly connects on the corner kick. Strong start by Liverpool and the crowd is into it.
5th min.: Man City are giving the ball up early. Joao Cancelo gave it away deep and Mo Salah almost took advantage. It turned into a cross which didn’t result in any danger for Man City.
1st min.: We’re off and Liverpool immediately on the front foot.
11:30 a.m.: The tribute to former Liverpool star Roger Hunt:
11:29 a.m.: You’ll Never Walk Alone … to get the juices flowing:
11:28 a.m.: Teams are out of the tunnel.
The Premier League anthem is atrocious. Just in case you’d all forgotten.

11:10 a.m.: Listen to Pep speak before the match:
11:09 a.m.: All eyes will be on James Milner, who replaces Trent Alexander-Arnold, and his battle against Man City’s Jack Grealish.
Never any doubt that James Milner would be tasked with trying to fill Trent AA’s boots against his former club this afternoon. What a signing he’s been since he walked away from City six years ago. #LFC https://t.co/rr5NU8vZQ4
