Pueblo women, activists rally against recent Texas abortion law

Dozens of demonstrators gathered at the Pueblo County Courthouse for the Women's March for Southern Colorado on Saturday October 2, 2021.

Several dozen women gathered to speak out on the steps of the Pueblo County Courthouse Saturday morning to advocate for women’s rights and pro-choice legislation.

The event was one of more than 600 held across the nation to demand an end to “attacks on reproductive rights and women’s freedoms in this country,” according to organizers.

Patricia O’Brien, a member of the Women’s March of Southern Colorado organizer team, said the event was quickly organized to speak out on issues Pueblo women are facing, in addition to a string of anti-abortion bills in other states.

“It’s not the only issue — we are a multi-issue group, and concerned about women continuing to move forward in their progress in Pueblo and in Colorado,” she said. “The trigger (for this event) was the decision by the Supreme Court to not push back on the ban in Texas … that was representative of what is happening for women, especially in Texas, to have no access to abortion, should they need it.”
