LAWRENCE, Kan. – No. 1 Texas Volleyball survived a five-set thriller and beat Kansas 3-2 (18-25, 21-25, 25-21, 25-19, 15-13) on Saturday at Horejsi Family Volleyball Arena. The Longhorns (12-0) pulled off the reverse sweep, winning the final three sets, to remain unbeaten on the season.
Skylar Fields, the reigning National Player of the Week, had a career-high 26 kills and hit .373 during the match. In the fifth set, Fields put the match away with six kills and a .417 hitting percentage.
Logan Eggleston had 18 kills and a career-high 20 digs for her seventh double-double of the season, adding a pair of service aces as well. Asjia O’Neal finished with a season-high 12 kills to go with three blocks, two digs and one ace.
Jhenna Gabriel had 57 assists, one shy of her career high number, and finished with 13 digs for her first double-double of the season.
Kansas came out of the gates strong, winning the first set 25-18 to hand Texas its only opening set loss of the season. The second set was close until the end, but the Jayhawks finished on a 5-1 run to take it 25-21.
The Longhorns turned the match around with a strong third set, winning it 25-21 and never trailing. In the fourth set, Kansas got out to an early 10-5 lead but Texas didn’t panic and rattled off an 8-3 run to tie it at 13. From that point, Texas never trailed again in the match.
Texas and Kansas will square off again on Sunday at 3 p.m. at Horejsi Arena, with the match broadcast nationally on ESPNU.
