EDINBURG, Texas – The Edinburg City Council is looking to reduce city taxes for its residents. It will vote to adopt the newly proposed rate following a public hearing at the next regularly scheduled city council meeting set for September 6, 2022.

At last night’s meeting on Tuesday, August 23rd, Mayor Ramiro Garza Jr., Mayor Pro-Tem Johnny Garcia, and council members David White, Daniel ‘Dan’ Diaz, and Jason De Leon voted to establish a proposal for a new city tax rate at .64 cents and set a Public Hearing to be held in less than two weeks to consider its adoption.

In 2019, former city council members voted to increase the tax rate from .635 to .68, which amounted to an increase of 4.5 cents. This proposal would reduce the current rate by 4 cents. If adopted, this would be the first tax rate reduction for Edinburg residents since 1996.

Mayor Ramiro Garza Jr. says the reduction would help provide necessary relief to Edinburg residents amid rising costs of living and inflation rates and adds that the tax rate, if adopted, would not affect existing services or improvement programs.

“I believe we should provide tax relief to our residents while still addressing our city needs,” Mayor Garza says. “The proposed budget will include enough funds to maintain and strengthen city services while also making strategic investments in infrastructure, public safety, and quality of life improvements.”

The community is encouraged to join in on the discussion on September 6th at 6:00 PM at the Edinburg City Hall Council Chambers, located at 415 W. University Drive. The meeting will also be streamed live at www.cityofedinburg.com and on Spectrum Channel 1300.
