EDINBURG, Texas – The Western Athletic Conference announced on Tuesday that senior defender Jan Engels of The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men’s soccer team has been named WAC Offensive Player of the Week.

Engels helped the Vaqueros to a 4-1 victory over Omaha on Saturday with a career-high tying four points as he scored a goal and recorded two assists.

Engels’ first assist came less than a minute into the match when his shot hit off the post and found Juan Pablo Gonzalez, who put it into the net for the goal and the 1-0 lead.

Less than a minute into the second half, Engels took a pass from Beto Carrillo and then connected with Moiad Ankir, who snuck it by the goalie for his second assist of the match as the Vaqueros took the 2-0 lead.

In the 48th minute, Engels got in on the scoring as he took a loose ball and snuck it by a couple defenders and into the right corner of the goal for his second goal of the season.

Engels also anchored a defense that allowed just six shots in the match. Engels now leads the Vaqueros with six points on the season.

The Vaqueros are back in action on Saturday when they close out their non-conference schedule at California State University Northridge (CSUN) on Saturday at 9 p.m.
