EDINBURG, Texas – The Western Athletic Conference (WAC) announced on Wednesday that The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) men’s tennis junior Emilien Burnel and sophomore Borna Devald have been named the TicketSmarter WAC Men’s Tennis Doubles Players of the Week.
The duo of Burnel and Devald went 2-0 competing in the No. 1 doubles flight for UTRGV last week, claiming back-to-back hard-earned tiebreaker victories in California. On Saturday, Burnel/Devald fought to force the tiebreaker against Hawaii’s top duo of Andre Ilagan/Lucas Labrunie and closed the bout strong to take the 7-6 (7-3) win. They followed that up with another gritty performance on Sunday to capture an impressive 7-6 (7-5) win over Nevada’s top duo of Matheo Coupu/Delmas N’Tcha.
The Burnel/Devald pairing is riding a four-match winning streak and boasts a 7-2 record in dual matches this spring. This is the second WAC award of the spring season for this duo.
UTRGV completes its California road trip with an 11 a.m. (CT) match Thursday at UC Irvine.
