On Saturday, Sept. 16, the Port Isabel Lady Tarpons hosted a best-of-five volleyball game against the Raymondville Lady Bearkats. Lady Tarpons took the first set but then lost the next two. The girls rebounded and won the fourth set, but lost in the final set.

The first set started pretty evenly with Raymondville getting on the scoreboard first on a side out. The teams then took turns getting side-outs for the first couple of points.

With PI up 4-3, Juliana Leon set the ball up for Nadia Flaig. Flaig proceeded to spike the ball for the point and got another serving point before the teams started to trade points again.

After the teams traded side-outs, Flaig was up to serve and hit the ball straight toward the back-row player, who was unable to put it into play. The Lady Tarpons led 7-4.

With PI up 10-6, Leon served the ball and the teams went on a long rally. The Lady Kats finally scored on a cross-court shot. The Lady Tarpons had trouble communicating on the court and the Lady Kats took advantage as they cut PI’s lead down to 10-9. After a serve by Raymondville, Leon set up Emily Burrage for the attack and Burrage proceeded with a thunderous spike, stopping the Lady Kats’ small run.

PI’s Kimberly Barrera served the ball into play. The Lady Kats front-row player tried to return the ball. Flaig rejected the shot. Raymondville got a side out and scored on their serve to close the gap to 12-11, in favor of PI.

With PI up 16-15, Raymondville served the ball into play. After being returned once, Leon set up the ball for Valerie Gonzalez. She spiked the ball with force. The defender wasn’t able to block the shot.
