On Monday, October 2, 2023, San Benito Police Department (SBPD) officers reported a noticeable increase in theft, tampering, and burglaries of newer model Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra model trucks.
According to a SBPD media release, three such trucks were targeted within the city over the weekend. According to the statement, one truck was burglarized, one was stolen, and the other was targeted for theft, resulting in the arrest of Severo Villagomez and Cesar Acosta, both San Benito residents.
According to the SBPD, the individuals were found to possess an electronic key programming device and tools commonly used in the theft/burglary of vehicles.
“The department is monitoring these situations closely and working with surrounding agencies to prosecute individuals actively involved with these thefts and others in the surrounding areas,” read a statement issued by San Benito Public Relations Director David Favila.
“You (the public) can also help us prevent these types of crimes. Be vigilant and report suspicious activity to your local police authorities. Keep areas around your home well-lit and park in commonly used areas at public parking lots. Keep your doors locked and store away or remove items of value from your vehicle,” the City’s statement read.
