LA VILLA, Texas – Hidalgo County Precinct 1 Commissioner David L. Fuentes and Hidalgo County Drainage District No.1 will host a Groundbreaking Ceremony to celebrate the Main Floodwater Channel Expansion Project.
The groundbreaking event will be held North of FM 491 in La Villa on Monday, October 30, 2023, at 11 a.m.

“Our commitment to improving the drainage infrastructure in Precinct 1 for our residents and businesses continues with the Main Floodwater Channel Expansion Project,” said Fuentes. “We are proud to have received nearly $10 million in grant monies to complete this project.”
The Office of Precinct 1 will be joined by representatives from the Office of Congressman Vicente Gonzalez Dist. 34 and the Texas General Land Office.
All drainage systems from Abram Road, FM 495, FM 490, and FM 491 flow through the Main Floodwater Channel (MFWC). The proposed MFWC will be 4.22 miles in length, and will widen from an existing channel width of about 100 feet to nearly 350 feet. The project is estimated to benefit more than 375,000 residents. Once completed, the MFWC will have approximately three times more flow capacity and approximately two times larger ditch cross-sectional area. It will take two years to complete.
All media and the public are invited to attend.
