LA FERIA, TX—This past Monday, October 23, the Port Isabel Lady Tarpons played their last regular season game against the visiting La Feria Lady Lionettes.

The Lady Tarpons jumped out to a 3-0 start in the first set, but La Feria came roaring back to win the set 25-13. The second set was a more competitive game, but La Feria eventually won the set 28-25.

As the third set got underway, the teams started trading points as La Feria took an early 3-2 lead. Fatigue set in for the Lady Tarpons as the Lady Lionettes went on a 6-1 run. PI managed to cut into La Feria’s lead but still trailed 10-6.

After a long rally, La Feria could not return the ball to the field of play, but they still led 18-14. PI’s Emily Burrage got off an excellent serve. As the Lady Lionettes returned the ball, but PI’s Valery Gonzalez had a thunderous spike for the kill. Gonzalez was in the zone as she went on to have two more spike kills as the Lady Tarpons tied the game at 18-18.

The teams went on to trade points. Behind Gonzalez’s outstanding play at the net, PI tied the game at 22-22. La Feria regained the lead but could not return PI’s Kimberly Barrera’s serve as PI took a 24-23.

Unfortunately, PI made critical mistakes at the end as La Feria won the third set 26-24.

Head coach Johvonne Howard was proud of her team’s effort all season.
