Mission, Texas – On Monday, October 23, 2023, the Mission City Council passed a resolution ordering a special election to fill the vacancy of councilmember for Place 3. The vacancy occurred on October 19, 2023, following Councilman Abel Flores’ resignation from office upon announcing his candidacy for Hidalgo County District Court Judge.
Below are the 4 candidates for the open position:
In accordance with Article 11, Section 11 of the Texas Constitution and Texas Elections Code Section 201.052, a special election shall be held on or after the 46th day after the election is ordered and within 120 days after such vacancy occurs. For those reasons, the Mission City Council has scheduled the Special Election for December 9, 2023, to elect a new councilmember for Place 3.
Further, in compliance with Section 201.054 of the Texas Elections Code, the submission period to file for candidacy commenced October 24, 2023, and concludes on October 30, 2023, at 5:00 p.m. Central Standard Time. Applicants must file their sworn applications with the City Secretary at the Mission City Hall, located at 1201 E. 8th St., Mission, Texas. All applications must comply with the Mission City Charter and Texas laws governing elections.
The Hidalgo County Elections Administrator will conduct early voting by personal appearance at the following locations and times:

– Mission Boys & Girls Club Gym at Bannworth Park, 1822 N. Shary Road Mission, TX
