This past Friday, April 12, the Port Isabel Lady Tarpons softball took to the road to take on the La Grulla Lady Gators. This was their second matchup of the season, as the Lady Tarpons beat the Lady Gators 14-4 during their first meeting.

Port Isabel, demonstrating their strong teamwork, was up to bat first and quickly had two baserunners on base with back-to-back singles by Arianna Garcia and Kimberly Barrera. After the pair stole second and third bases, Garcia saw an opening and stole home a few plays later. This early lead of 1-0 showcased the Lady Tarpons’ coordinated efforts.

In the bottom of the first, Port Isabel’s starting pitcher, Chelsea Gonzalez, took the mound and had a quick ‘three up, three down’ inning which included two strikeouts, further solidifying the team’s performance.
It was a defensive second inning, as the Lady Gators’ double play stopped Port Isabel from scoring another run. Meanwhile, Gonzalez made quick work of the side with another ‘three up, three down’ inning.

In the top of the third, the Lady Tarpons’ bats started to catch fire, as some solid hits brought three more runs for Port Isabel. Defensively, Gonzalez started to show a little bit of fatigue but still added two more strikeouts, and Port Isabel now led 4-0.

In the top of the fourth, Port Isabel’s Carmen Garza opened the inning with a solid hit over the left fielder’s head for a standing triple. A few plays later, Garcia’s single brought in two runs, giving Port Isabel a 6-0 lead.

The next batter, Barerra, hit a flyball to left field, but the outfielder misplayed the ball, and Barerra kept on running all the way home for an in-the-park home run, and Port Isabel extended their lead to 8-0. Not done with their offensive onslaught, Julie Mar’s triple led to two RBIs as Port Isabel now had a commanding 10-0 lead.

In the top of the fifth, Port Isabel’s Natalie Martinez single brought in a run to make it 11-0. Gonzalez and Andrea Garcia followed suit, and two more runs came in, Port Isabel now up 13-0. A single by Mar brought in a run, and a fielding error led to another run coming in, as Port Isabel now led 15-0. La Grulla was kept in check again by Gonzalez, who won and finished the night with seven strikeouts.

With the win, Port Isabel maintains third place behind the district frontrunners Zapata and La Feria. The Lady Tarpons close out the regular season on the road this Friday, April 19, versus La Feria at 7 p.m.
