Man accused of burglarizing vehicles – Port Isabel-South Padre Press

Cameron County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested a male subject suspected of robbing area vehicles.

According to the Cameron County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO), on Wednesday, April 17, 2024, at about 4:20 a.m., Cameron County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to the 200 block of Van Buren in Laguna Heights regarding a suspect allegedly caught in the act of breaking into vehicles.

Upon their arrival to the area, sheriff’s deputies made contact with multiple victims who reported that a male subject broke windows to several vehicles and stole items from two of those vehicles. The victims described the suspect as a local homeless person who frequents the area. The subject is said to have fled the area prior to the deputies’ arrival to the scene, read a CCSO report.

Sheriff’s investigators assigned to this case were able to identify the suspect as 19-year-old Rey Sebastian Lopez. During the days’ long investigation, investigators learned Lopez was incarcerated at the Cameron County Carrizales Rucker Detention Center in Olmito on unrelated charges.

Sheriff’s investigators, according to the report, interviewed Lopez who confessed to burglarizing and causing damages to the vehicles’ windows. Sheriff’s investigators secured arrest warrants authorizing Lopez’s arrest for two counts of Burglary of Vehicle and Criminal Mischief.

According to the CCSO, on Friday, May 17, 2024, sheriff’s deputies arrested Rey Sebastian Lopez and transported him to the Cameron County Carrizales Rucker Detention Center pending arraignment. Lopez was charged with two counts of Burglary of Vehicle; TPC: 30.04, a Class “A” Misdemeanor and Criminal Mischief; TPC: 28.03, a Class “B” Misdemeanor.

All subjects are considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
