Tarpons compete in 7on7 state qualifier – Port Isabel-South Padre Press

Special to the PRESS

Starting in late April, the Texas 7on7 organization started holding State Qualifying Tournaments (SQT) throughout the state in three different divisions. Division I consists of teams that compete in 5A or 6A (public) & SPC or TAPPS Division I (private) schools.

Division II consists of teams that compete in 4A and 3A-D1 (public) & all other private schools. Division III consists of teams that compete in 1A through 3A-D2 public schools. SQTs range from eight to thirty-two teams and one qualifier advances for each eight teams participating.

This past Saturday, May 25, Port Isabel’s 7on7 team traveled to Kingsville to compete in the Division II SQT. Eight teams participated in the Kingsville 7on7 event with the Port Isabel team being placed in Pool A along with Rockport-Fulton, Ingleside and Kingsville. Pool B consisted of Jourdanton, Pleasanton, Beeville Jones and Sinton.

The Tarpons opened the day with a big 29-12 win over Rockport-Fulton. They then followed that up with a 25-6 win against H.M. King in game two.

In their third game, the Tarpons came up just short as they lost 17-15 to Ingleside. Although they lost the game, there was a 3-way tie in the pool and the Tarpons advanced based on points.

The Championship game featured the PI Tarpons facing off with the Beeville Jones Trojans. The Tarpons were missing two key players, but still played a tough back-and-forth game. Turnovers proved too costly and they eventually lost to the Trojans, 20-12. With only 8 teams participating, Beeville Jones was the lone team that advanced to the state tourney.

PI quarterback, Bryan Martinez, felt the tournament was “a great learning experience for us all. We will move forward as a team and use the losses as motivation,” said Martinez. “I am confident in the team we have.”

The Port Isabel team will have one more chance to qualify for the state tourney when they compete at Port Isabel’s “Battle By The Bay” 7on7 tournament to be held on June 15 at Tarpon Stadium. In the meantime, the Tarpons will be playing in PSJA’s upcoming 7on7 tournament to be held on Sunday, June 2, which is not affiliated with the Texas State 7on7.
