In preparation for the upcoming Texas 7on7 SQT, the Port Isabel 7on7 team traveled to the upper valley on June 1 to compete in the PSJA 7on7 tournament (not affiliated with the Texas SQT’s).

In their first game, the Port Isabel squad beat PSJA 13-6, but then lost to Weslaco 14-6 in their second game. In their third game, PI beat McAllen Nikki Rowe 8-7 to advance to the finals setting a rematch with the Weslaco Panthers. This time the Tarpons were victorious as they beat the Panthers 19-6 and became tournament champions.

In other Texas 7on7 SQT action featuring valley teams, Mission hosted the “Sharyland Snake Pit” 7on7 Division I SQT on June 8. The meet featured 24 teams with the following teams moving on to the state tournament, PSJA, PSJA North and Laredo United. The last opportunity for a valley team to advance to state will be during the “RGV Mid Valley” SQT held on June 22.

The last time a Port Isabel 7on7 team made it to the state tournament was back in 2012 and 2013 with quarterback Isaiah Martinez at the helm.
