The 4A Port Isabel Lady Tarpons basketball team hosted the 3A Rio Hondo Lady Bobcats in a non-district matchup this past Tuesday, Nov. 12.

The Lady Tarpons have gotten off to a rough start after losing their first three games, but looked to turn things around against the Lady Bobcats.

Port Isabel struggled from the opening buzzer as they saw themselves down 23-6 after one quarter of play. PI’s Emily Burrage scored all of the Lady Tarpons points during the quarter, including a layup at the buzzer. As a team, they only made two out of 11 shot attempts while committing seven turnovers.

In the second quarter, the Lady Tarpons played better defensively, but still committed 10 turnovers, trailing 39-11 at halftime.

As the second half got underway, the Lady Tarpons turned the ball over less, leading to more offensive baskets. By the end of the third quarter, the Lady Bobcats had a commanding 53-23 lead.

The fourth quarter was tough, as the Lady Tarpons only made one of eight shots while committing another seven turnovers. Rio Hondo looked in mid-season form as they took the 61-25 win.

With the starting five not set, Port Isabel rotated in their bench from the second quarter, trying to find the right combination. Other than Burrage, the team still needs to work on passing the ball and shooting. It’s still early enough in the season to turn things around.

Next up for the Lady Tarpons will be the Brownsville Tournament scheduled for Nov. 14-16.
