On Tuesday, the City of San Benito announced that it was awarded a $232,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) through the Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) program.
According to a press release, the funds will be used to develop a Comprehensive Safety Action Plan aimed at improving safety for all roadway users in the city.
The grant was made possible through the efforts of Representative Vicente Gonzalez and will be allocated to the city’s transportation department to help eliminate roadway fatalities and serious injuries, read the release. “The program aligns with the City of San Benito’s commitment to creating safer streets for pedestrians, cyclists, motorists and all other users,” according to the City.
The award comes from the Office of the Secretary of Transportation and will specifically address the City’s safety challenges by creating data-driven strategies to reduce traffic-related risks. The comprehensive plan will identify high-risk locations and propose measures to prevent accidents, with the ultimate goal of fostering safer streets for the citizens of San Benito.
“This grant is an important step toward ensuring the safety and well-being of all our residents,” said San Benito City Manager Fred Sandoval. “By investing in a comprehensive safety plan, we can take proactive measures to reduce accidents and fatalities, making San Benito a safer place to live, work, and travel.”
He added that the funds will support various initiatives, including public outreach, and data analysis, which will be vital in addressing the city’s most pressing safety concerns.
