EDINBURG, Texas – A stunning new mural is coming to life on the Gateway Building at 315 S. Closner in downtown Edinburg, vividly showcasing the city’s rich history, vibrant culture, and enduring community values. Designed by nationally acclaimed artist Mauricio Ramirez, the mural, titled “Edinburg, There Is No Place Like Home,” is a captivating addition to Edinburg’s growing public art scene.
Selected from a competitive pool of applicants by the Cultural Activities Board, Ramirez was chosen for his exceptional ability to weave bold, geometric artistry into meaningful narratives. Known for his large-scale murals across the U.S., Ramirez specializes in creating pieces that evoke community pride and spark engagement.
“I wanted this mural to capture the heart and soul of Edinburg,” said Ramirez. “Every segment tells a part of the city’s story, from its musical heritage to its dedication to education and its legacy of honoring heroes.”

Tejano Legend Hometown & Music Friendly City: A homage to Edinburg’s rich musical heritage and its designation as a Music Friendly City by the Governor’s Office. |
City of Festivals: A colorful celebration of the city’s renowned festivals, which draw thousands of visitors each year. |
Purple Heart City: A tribute to Edinburg’s status as a Purple Heart City, featuring symbolic red poppies to honor fallen heroes. |
Commitment to Education: A segment emphasizing Edinburg’s dedication to academic excellence. |
Hometown of Heroes: Highlighting the legacy of Freddy Gonzalez with a striking depiction of the hometown hero as a symbol of bravery and sacrifice. |
Public Art Expansion
The City of Edinburg has also announced plans for additional murals to be installed throughout the city in the coming months. These works, to be created by selected local artists, will celebrate Edinburg’s heritage and values while further enhancing its urban landscape.

Mauricio Ramirez is a nationally celebrated muralist known for his bold geometric designs and compelling storytelling. Based in Chicago and with connections to the Rio Grande Valley, Ramirez has completed over 100 public art projects in cities such as Chicago, Denver, and Houston.
