Cancer prevention training slated – Port Isabel-South Padre Press

The Port Isabel Volunteer Firemen’s Association will provide training for those who want to learn more about cancer and how it affects those in fire services. The classes will be held at the Port Isabel Event and
Cultural Center on Dec.6 from 1-4 p.m. Classes are available to everyone, not just first responders.

The classes will give attendees “essential knowledge and resources on cancer prevention, awareness and safety for brave first responders.”

According to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society [LLS], firefighters have an increased risk of developing cancer. Due to the nature of their job, they are exposed to harmful chemicals and materials in the form of
smoke during fires. These chemicals penetrate the protective gear the firefighters wear. Over time, they deal unfathomable amounts of damage to the skin and lungs.

The LLS recommends firefighters reduce exposure to diesel exhaust from fire apparatus whenever possible and use diesel exhaust containment or removal systems to keep exposure to a minimum. They also
encourage thorough cleanings of Personal Protective Equipment [PPE] and Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus [SCBA] according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

The LLS advises against washing PPE at home or a public laundry mat, and to retire damaged or destroyed gear according to National Fire Protection Association [NFPA] guidelines. The LLS encourages firefighters
to clean themselves as soon as possible with wet wipes or soap and water, then take a proper shower upon returning to the station and change into clean clothes. They also strongly encourage past and present
firefighters to make their work and volunteer history known to their doctors.

Recording exposure and incidents is recommended, as well as keeping a healthy lifestyle. It is advised by the society to avoid substances like tobacco and alcohol.

Registration is available for the class on the official PI Volunteer Firemen’s Association page on Facebook. The Port Isabel Cultural Event and Cultural Center is at 309 E. Railroad, Port Isabel, Texas, 78578.
