The U.S. Coast Guard last week seized approximately 1,595 pounds of illegally caught red snapper and nine sharks while detaining 11 Mexican fishermen.

In a news release, the Coast Guard said the large seizure happened last Thursday after boat crews, watch standers, aircrews and U.S. Customs and Border Protection located and stopped the crews who were engaged in illegal fishing north of the Maritime Boundary Line.

After seizing the fish and gear, the men were taken into custody, brought ashore and transferred to CBP for further processing.

Lt. Shane Gunderson, commanding officer at Station South Padre Island, said crews will not pull back from efforts to end illegal fishing and trafficking on the maritime border.

“We remain committed to enforcing the laws of this nation,” Gunderson said in a statement.
