This past week, Point Isabel Independent School District [PIISD] celebrated its 100th day of the school year.
Victor Barrera is a teacher at Port Isabel Early College High School [PIECHS], an assistant coach to the school’s basketball and football teams, Distributed Education Clubs of America [DECA] Chapter Advisor, and head of the school’s VITA Tax Program.

Barrera stated the year was going as planned. He said his students have been fulfilling his expectations throughout the year.

“Most students have performed to a high level academically and in all sports participation,” said Barrera.
He added that there have not been any major issues, except having to work around his students’ busy schedules, which requires a large amount of teamwork on behalf of the administration.

Barrera and Hilda Zermeno, ACE coordinator, trained 35 students at the school for the VITA Tax assistance program, and all 35 earned certificates. They are now going forth and assisting the public with free tax
services. Barrera shared that student members of DECA participated in the District 1 DECA CDC Career Development Conference at the McAllen Convention Center. The district saw 47 students compete, and 36 are set to proceed to the State Conference in Dallas, Texas. This year, the conference saw students from 32 other high schools. According to Barrera, this is the 30th year that PIECHS has had the most students advance over other competing schools.
