The City of Laguna Vista is slated to hold an election to fill the Town Council Place Three vacancy. The deadline for applicants was on Tuesday, Feb. 18. The election will be held on April 15 at the City Hall. This comes after the resignation of the previous seat holder, Bettina Tolin.

According to the Laguna Vista City Charter, those who wish to hold office as a council member or mayor must be a registered voter. They must also have resided in the town of Laguna Vista for at least “twelve consecutive months” preceding the deadline for filing.

Chief Greg Cruz, the current acting city manager and police chief of the city, said the runners for the council should be made public by Friday, Feb. 21, or sometime the following week.

Cruz also confirmed that the city has been searching for a new town manager after Rendie Gonzalez resigned, and is preparing interviews with qualified candidates. Cruz said the town should be ready to announce its decision by the next election.

According to the Texas Municipal League [TML], city managers must be “chosen by the Council solely on the basis of executive and administrative training, experience, and ability.”

According to a previous PRESS article, Cruz has served as the interim city manager and police chief since December. He was appointed at the Dec.16 town hall meeting.
