This past Thursday, Feb. 13, the Port Isabel women’s powerlifting team traveled to La Feria to compete at the Lionettes Invitational Powerlifting Meet.
The meet featured the following eight schools: Port Isabel, PSJA North, Santa Maria, Hidalgo, Valley View, Lyford, La Feria and Rio Hondo.
The following are the PI women’s results. *=Qualified for Regional. **= Alternate for Regional.
In the 97-weight class, Emily Orduna* came in third place with a total lift of 515 lbs. (Squat:235, Bench:95, Dead Lift:185). Orduna was tied with Iyairy Guzman for the second most improved as they both increased
their total weight from the previous week by 60 lbs.
In the 105-weight class, Natalissa Arambul** came in eighth place with a total lift of 425 lbs. (Squat:165, Bench:85, Dead Lift:175).
In the 114-weight class, Stacey Suarez* won gold with a total lift of 710 lbs. (Squat:320, Bench:165, Dead Lift:225) and is currently #5 in the regional rankings for her class.
In the 123-weight class, Maria Vasquez* won silver with a total lift of 710 lbs. (Squat:300, Bench:135, Dead Lift:275). Also in the same weight class, Charlize Ramirez* came in sixth place with a total lift of 615
lbs. (Squat:235, Bench:140, Dead Lift:240).
In the 132-weight class, Esmeralda Montoya* won her fourth gold of the season with a total lift of 880 lbs. (Squat:360, Bench:185, Dead Lift:335) and is currently ranked #3 in the region. Meanwhile, Samantha
Schrank* won bronze with a total lift of 745 lbs. (Squat:290, Bench:170, Dead Lift:285).
In the 148-weight class, Daniela Alonso* came in fourth with a total lift of 765 lbs. (Squat:360, Bench:150, Dead Lift:255).
In the 165-weight class, Nataly Ramirez* won bronze with a total lift of 745 lbs. (Squat:300, Bench:155, Dead Lift:290), and Brigette Montes** came in fifth place with a total lift of 710 lbs (Squat:300, Bench:165,
Dead Lift:245).
In the 181-weight class, Saturn Trejo* won gold with a total lift of 1015 lbs. (Squat:455, Bench:255, Dead Lift:305) and is currently #2 in the regional rankings. Trejo had the teams most improved total lift with an
impressive 70lb increase from the previous week.
In the 220-weight class, Emma Villarreal* won gold with a total lift of 780 lbs. (Squat:315, Bench:185, Dead Lift:280).
In the 242-weight class, Iyairy Guzman* won gold with a total lift of 860 lbs. (Squat:355, Bench:190, Dead Lift:315).
Also qualifying for regionals was Kelly Flores who competes in the 198-weight class.
Overall, the PI women’s team had a great performance competing at the La Feria meet coming out in first place. The order of finish was: 1. Port Isabel 52 points, 2. La Feria (39), 3. Santa Maria (24), 4. Hidalgo
(22), 5. Lyford (21), 6. Zapata (19), 7. Rio Hondo (12), 8. Raymondville (7), 9. Valley View (2).
The men’s team have a week off as they prepare for their upcoming qualifier hosted by Port Isabel Early College Highschool on Feb. 22 at Port Isabel’s main gym.
The next women’s powerlifting meet will be the 4A Girls’ Regional meet held at the Bert Ogden Arena on Feb. 25, 2025.
