The San Benito Greyhounds tennis team recently traveled to McAllen to participate in a tournament.
In girls’ singles, senior Briana Salinas placed second, and sophomore Alejandra Pinon was fourth.
In boys’ doubles, seniors Cruz Guzman and Ricky Salazar finished third.
In girls’ doubles, junior Lucero Gonzalez and sophomore Krystal de Leon placed third.
In a previous tournament the same month in Brownsville, San Benito’s mixed doubles team of Ryan Lerma and Lucero Gonzalez placed first, beating a Brownsville Veterans Memorial team for the title.
Also, Arlynn Mendez and Emily Vargas placed second in girls’ doubles.
In sub-varsity play, the junior varsity mixed doubles team of Joe Hernandez and Audrey Rios placed third at the Brownsville tournament.
Coach Imelda Cavazos said the freshman team is showing steady forward progress. In girls’ singles, Isabel Villarreal has won back-to-back first place titles in two separate tournaments, while Kaylah Sierra has placed second, respectively.
Deven Parsons came home with a second place medal in boys’ singles.
In boys’ doubles, Nicholas Hinojosa and Giovanni Davila were second and most recently placed first in Brownsville.
The girls’ doubles team of Dayana Ortiz and Jazmin Guerrero placed fourth, and Giselle Rodriguez and Lindy Yzaguirre placed first in consolation.

As February comes to an end, both the San Benito boys’ and girls’ soccer teams continue to play out their District 32-6A schedule.
The Greyhounds are 2-4 in district and in fourth place. They are 7-7-2 overall.
Since Valentine’s Day on Feb. 14, the ‘Hounds have won one of four matches. The victory came against Brownsville Hanna, 3-0. Goals were scored by Antwoan Alegria, Jiovanni Najera, and Francisco Barrientos.
San Benito’s losses were against Brownsville Veterans Memorial (3-2), Harlingen (3-1), and in its last match this week Los Fresnos (3-1).
Alegria and Everardo Escobedo scored in the Vets match; Alegria scored against Harlingen; and Najera against Los Fresnos.
In girls’ play, the Lady ‘Hounds are in fifth place with a 0-6 record. They are 9-16-2 on the season.
In the last four matches, San Benito has lost to Vets Memorial (6-5), Harlingen (9-0), Hanna (2-0), and recently to Los Fresnos (7-0).
In the Vets match, San Benito’s Mayeli Rodriguez and Amy Herrera earned one goal each, and Gianna Garza had three goals. April Soto had an assist.
Both San Benito teams have two district matches remaining on their schedules: Friday at Vets and next Tuesday at home against Harlingen.
