Moments in Time is a collection of recovered newspaper briefs and other publications, compiled by local historian, Steve Hathcock, offering a look back at the history of the Rio Grande Valley.

Nazis Want America Below Rio Grande

Mexico City-AP- George S. Messersmith, new US ambassador to Mexico and one time consulate general in Berlin, related Saturday a 1934 conversation with Wilhelm (Herman) Goering and which Hitler’s Lieutenant said: “Our only concern is that all America South of the Rio Grande be ours.”
Messersmith, who arrived Saturday to assume his post here, said this statement came from Goering during a discussion of the Monroe Doctrine. (Star Monitor Herald Harlingen Feb. 15, 1942)

Skin Divers Needed To Hunt For Treasure

Treasure hunting continues in Texas and the spotlight may soon turn to the Gulf adjacent to the South Padre Island in Cameron County. Paul Znika, who is an ice cream manufacturer in Indiana, wrote the Valley Chamber of Commerce seeking deep- sea divers, persons equipped for treasure hunting in the waters of the Gulf.

Mr. Znika is not a newcomer to the Gulf Coast, having found coins which were dated 1553 on his previous visit to the area. The Cameron County Park Board has recently published a treasure map which has proven quite popular; and while Mr. Znika does not indicate in his letter that this caused him to become active, he does state that the information he has through his studies, indicates that treasure can be found 50 to 100 yards out into the Gulf from the beach and about 3 miles along the coast. Through his studies, Mr. Znika has also found that some of the ships that went down in this area were carrying over $5,000,000 in gold and silver.

The inquiry was forwarded on to the Port Isabel Chamber of Commerce with the request that these assist Mr. Znika in preparing for this search. (San Benito News March 4, 1965)
