RIO HONDO, TX—After nearly a month into softball competition, the Lady Bobcats are owning a 2-5 record with their latest loss coming at the hands of the La Feria Lady Lions on Tuesday.
The Lady ’Cats, who lost 8-2, avoided the shutout in the final two innings.
Trailing 7-0, Rio Hondo’s Jacqueline Hinojosa and Rebekah Zuniga each earned an RBI to score Danielle Rocha and Lauren Rincones. It was one of five hits the Lady ’Cats earned, but the Lady Lions took advantage of four Rio Hondo errors. La Feria scored twice in each of the first and second innings, and added three runs in the third for the lead.
The Rio Hondo’s two wins came against Valley View (10-9 score) in the season opener Feb. 10 and against Grulla (13-10) on Feb. 18. Pitcher Madison Lopez notched the win against Valley View, and hurler Jacquelynn Hinojosa against Grulla.
Losses in tournament play were against Mercedes (10-0), Harlingen (10-3), Brownsville Veterans Memorial (4-2), and Weslaco East (5-3).
The Lady ’Cats will be playing bigger schools in the coming weeks, including Los Fresnos (March 7), Brownsville Hanna (March 10), and Brownsville Veterans Memorial (March 11). Rio Hondo’s District 32-3A opener is at Lyford on March 18.
The Lady ’Cats are coached by Benjamin Perez. The roster includes the following players and jersey numbers: Olga Zuniga (00, Abigail Atkinson (1), Madison Lopez (2), Carlie Rodriguez (3), Alexis Moreno (4), Jazmine Delgado (5), Rayla Tello (7), Jilliana Sauceda (11), Allison Atkinson (13), Mia Galvan (15), Kayla de la Cruz (17), Jacquelynn Hinojosa (20), Danielle Rocha (26), Lauren Rincones (34), and Rebekah Zuniga (99).
De la Cruz, Rocha, and Jacquelynn Hinojosa have each smacked homeruns. Rocha leads the team in hits with 11.
