The San Benito Greyhound Varsity Baseball Team gained a measure of revenge against an Edinburg team in a non-district game after competing in Hidalgo County last weekend.
The ‘Hounds lost four games at the three-day Edinburg ISD Tournament but responded with an impressive 13-3 home win this week against the Edinburg North Cougars.
“It was a big win for us; Edinburg North is coached well,” San Benito Head Coach Ramiro Partida, Jr. said. “We played great, and our pitching was awesome. If we can continue to play within our team philosophy, we can play well.”
That team philosophy is, “Get’em on, get’em over, and get’em in,” according to Partida.
San Benito scored three runs in the opening inning and although North responded with three runs of its own in the top of the second, the home team broke the tie.
The ‘Hounds scored four runs in the bottom of the second inning, and just added to their lead with two runs in the third, three runs in the fourth, and a run in the fifth.
Gabriel Covarrubias led San Benito with four RBIs, followed by two runs batted in each for Justin Montemayor and Aiden Barrera.
Eight different ‘Hounds scored a run with Mando Garcia crossing the home plate three times.
San Benito’s next non-district game is at home against Weslaco on March 17.
District 32-6A play begins on March 25 against Brownsville Hanna at home.
In the Edinburg Tournament, San Benito lost to McAllen Nikki Rowe (15-0), Edinburg Vela (5-2), Sharyland (8-4), and Corpus Christi King (11-0).
San Benito is 5-8 this season.
