Local Couple Frolic In The Warm Waters of The Gulf of Mexico While Blizzard Rages!

Mr. and Mrs. Marshall Beck returned Monday night from a trip of several weeks to the Southwest.

On March 4th, while the blizzard was raging around the east and the inauguration festival, they were bathing in the surf and warm sunlight at Tarpon Beach. Padre Island a resort not far from popular Corpus Christi, Texas.

They spent some time in Old and New Mexico also. Missus Beck expects to travel to Chicago on Saturday for a visit. (Moline (Illinois) Daily Dispatch. March 31, 1909)

Recommends They Be Armed!

The United States Coast Guard station crew at Brazos Island, which is isolated and without quick communications with the mainland at Point Isabel and is the furthest south United States Coast Guard Station, may soon be furnished with a supply of arms and ammunition.

James F. Phillips, Superintendent of this district, has recommended such a step to his superior officer at Washington, and quick action is anticipated. He recommended, besides that, the crew should be instructed in the manual of
arms.

Several of the lower stations and Brazos Island near the mouth of the Rio Grande, are open and isolated and the men would have no opportunity to defend themselves in the event of attack. It is the belief of Captain Phillips. That the crews could be drilled to the extent that they would be of great advantage in time of emergency at any nearby point. (Brownsville Daily Herald. Flying Boxcar On Display

Harlingen Air Force Base. United States Air Force’s famed flying boxcar, the C-119, capable of carrying 64 paratroopers, will be on display at the Armed Forces Day celebration Saturday. 21st at Harlingen Air Force Base. The C-119 is capable of towing a 30,000 lb. glider or transporting 35 hospital litters for emergency evacuations. ( San Benito. News May 19, 1955)
