The San Benito Lady Greyhounds earned a spot in the Class 6A postseason after finishing fourth in District 32-6A.

They played at Weslaco to take on the Lady Panthers in a bi-district match that was played Thursday, Oct. 30.

The Lady ‘Hounds finished district with a 2-6 record, with victories coming against the Brownsville Hanna Lady Eagles.

Their final district matches came in losses to the Brownsville Veterans Memorial Lady Chargers at home (3-1) and away against the Harlingen Lady Cardinals (3-0).

Their regular season, which included two August tournaments in Brownsville, ended with a 13-20 record.

San Benito’s best showing came early in the season when it put together four consecutive victories, eventually winning eight of 10 matches before September.

Their longest losing streak was six before and during the Edinburg Tournament.

The losing streak ended with the Lady ‘Hounds district opener at Hanna on Sept. 23.

One of those consecutive losses came against Weslaco. In fact, the Lady ‘Hounds played Weslaco three times this season. The first time at the Brownsville Hanna Tournament where it lost in two matches, then at the Edinburg Tournament, falling in competitive 3-2 sets.

Against Weslaco, the Lady ‘Hounds lost the first set, won the next two sets, but couldn’t win a decisive third.

Weslaco only had two opponents that it played a full five sets, Hebbronville in August, and then against San Benito on Sept. 9.

When the Lady Panthers won, they did so in three-match sweeps, but when they lost, they were swept, too.

San  Benito’s  playoff  opponent,  Weslaco,  finished  third in  District  31-6A  with  a  6-4  record,  and  23-18 overall. Edinburg and PSJA finished tied for first with 9-1 district marks.

The Los Fresnos Lady Falcons, Harlingen, and Veterans all finished atop district with identical 6-2 records. Hanna was 0-8 in district, respectively.

San Benito didn’t qualify for the postseason last year, but did so the year before after winning district.
