The South Padre Island Parks and Keep SPI Beautiful Committee met on October 15  to discuss ongoing park improvements, upcoming events, and new signage plans across the city’s green spaces.

Committee members highlighted the expansion of garden beds at Turtle Park, completed with help from city Parks staff, Adrian and Jose Luis. Thanks to plant donations from the Birding Center, the enhanced beds now provide additional cover for birds and wildlife. Hummingbirds, warblers, and yellow-billed cuckoos have already been spotted in the area, signaling the success of these habitat improvements.

Butterfly Park is also thriving after recent rains, with lush gardens attracting both butterflies and hummingbirds. A new “tiny library” box, decorated with butterfly designs by local Girl Scouts, is planned for installation in the coming weeks.

The committee reminded residents of several city council agenda items, including the proposed renaming of Water Tower Park and the installation of pickleball courts on a highly used property behind the ATT building. Citizens are encouraged to attend council meetings to voice their opinions on park development.

In upcoming events, the Hallow Wings Monarch Celebration will take place on Sunday, October 26, at the Birding Center. The free festival celebrates pollinator migration and features native plant sales, garden tours, music, and family activities.

Park maintenance updates were also shared. Water Tower Park received a new basketball hoop after the previous system rusted beyond repair. John L. Tompkins Park is seeing ground improvements and new signage, including a proposed reflective white and turquoise sign to help visitors identify the park from Padre Boulevard.

Additionally, the committee awarded the October “Yard and Landscape of the Month” to 106 East Corral Street, recognizing consistent care and aesthetic excellence.

Finally, preparations for the 2025 Christmas Street Parade are underway for Friday, December 5, with a backup date of December 12. Registration is now open for participants, including local bands, cheerleaders, and community groups. Volunteers are encouraged to assist in making this year’s parade a success.
