More than 50 groups lit up Padre Boulevard on Friday, Dec. 5, as residents and visitors lined the streets for the 2025 South Padre Island Christmas Parade. Hosted by the City of South Padre Island along with the Parks & Keep SPI Beautiful Committee, the annual tradition once again showcased the community’s holiday spirit through colorful floats, impressive performances, and dazzling displays.
Families gathered early to claim their spots along the parade route, many praising this year’s expanded lineup. “We come every year, but this was the brightest and most creative parade yet,” said Harligen resident Carolina Vargas, watching with her children from curbside. “The kids were glued to every float.”
This year’s entries, from school organizations to local businesses, were judged on theme, creativity, lighting and decoration, and overall presentation. A panel of judges selected winners in three categories: Specialty Units, Floats, and City Department.
In the Specialty Units division, the Port Isabel Early College High School Silver Belles Dance Team claimed first place, impressing spectators with their choreography and festive energy. The school’s Tarpon Cheerleaders earned second, while the Silver Tarpon Band rounded out the top three.
Many in the crowd said the youth groups were among the highlights of the evening. “Seeing the students perform just makes the whole event feel more joyful,” said visitor Jorge Martinez, who drove from Brownsville for the parade. “Their enthusiasm is contagious.”
“Celebrating Christmas at the Coral Reef Lounge” took first place in the Floats category with its vibrant, ocean-themed holiday design. The Upper Deck Hotel’s “Christmas Toys” float secured second place, and the South Padre Island Parrot Head Club took third with their signature island-style cheer.
The South Padre Island Fire Department earned top recognition in the City Department category for its bright, crowd-pleasing holiday presentation. The department’s decorated fire engine, covered in sparkling lights, drew loud cheers as it rolled past.
For many, the parade served as the unofficial kickoff to the island’s holiday season. “It’s one of those events that reminds you why this community is so special,” said Michelle Sandoval, who attended with friends. “Everyone comes together, and it feels like one big family.”
City officials said they were thrilled by this year’s turnout and the enthusiasm shown by participants and spectators alike.
The parade capped off a week of festive community events as South Padre Island continues its holiday celebrations throughout December.
