More than six years after a nationwide manhunt captivated the nation and ended here on South Padre Island, the chilling case of Lois Ann Riess — dubbed the “Killer Grandma” — is back in the spotlight with a new true-crime television feature that revisits the shocking cross-country crime spree which ended that ended on island shores.

In April 2018, local law enforcement and federal agents brought an extraordinary manhunt to an end just off Padre Boulevard when Riess, then 56, was arrested outside a South Padre Island restaurant after a tip from a vigilant staff member who recognized her from news reports.

Riess had been the subject of a nationwide search after investigators determined she murdered her husband, David Riess, in their Minnesota home earlier that spring and then embarked on a bizarre and deadly flight across several states.

Before landing in Texas, Riess’s  path wound through casinos and hotel rooms,  and  included  a second murder in Fort Myers Beach, Fla. There she is believed to have befriended Pamela Hutchinson, a woman who bore a striking resemblance to her, before killing her and stealing her car and identity.

At the time, authorities said Riess used Hutchinson’s identification and credit cards in an effort to elude law enforcement as she traveled.

Riess’s arrest was quiet and without incident, but the backstory was anything but ordinary. Once in custody, investigators found weapons and stolen identification, and the case that began in a quiet Minnesota community exploded into national headlines as police pieced together the timeline of her movements.

Following her arrest on South Padre Island, Riess faced justice in multiple jurisdictions. In Florida, she pleaded guilty to the murder of Hutchinson and received a life sentence without the possibility of parole. In Minnesota, she also entered a guilty plea to the first-degree murder of her husband, receiving a second life sentence. She is currently serving those sentences and will not be eligible for release.

Now, the case is featured in Dateline: Secrets Uncovered on Oxygen True Crime, bringing renewed attention to how an ordinary grandmother became a fugitive and killer. The episode explores her transformation from suburban life to criminal infamy, the multi-state manhunt that followed, and the unlikely moment in South Padre that brought it all to a close.
