The San Benito Greyhound Varsity Baseball Team is continuing to play the non-district part of its schedule, which has lately been successful, as the squad aims to keep its offensive momentum going in Weslaco on Friday.

After winning the San Benito CISD Tournament recently, the ’Hounds have kept their winning streak alive, now at four games.

The ‘Hounds are 6-2 in their last eight games. The Harlingen South Hawks spoiled that festive ‘Hounds’ feeling last week after slipping past San Benito, 6-3.

It’s a huge change from last month when San Benito started the season on a four-game losing streak.

In its own tournament title game, the team defeated the Raymondville Bearkats, 4-0.

The ’Hounds got revenge on the same Willacy County team after opening the tournament with an 8-7 loss.

But the ‘Hounds earned wins against the Donna North Chiefs (10-0 score) and the Marine Military Academy Leathernecks (13-8 score) to secure a title shot.

Victor Rodriguez was recognized as the tournament’s Most Valuable Player.

As team stats go, Rodriguez is tied with three others in runs scored with nine, as teammates Mason Garcia, Aiden Barrera, and Ethan Garza are also showing their prowess around the bases.

Rodriguez also had a team-high 13 hits, and is tied with Joaquin Tovias at 12 for team RBIs.

There are eight SBHS players (with at least 25 plate appearances over 11 games) who have a batting average of .300 or higher.

Joziah Davis (two doubles, three triples) leads all players with a .458 batting average.

The ‘Hounds will begin District 32-6A play on March 24 when they play at Brownsville Hanna.

District foes Los Fresnos Falcons (9-11-1) and Brownsville Veterans Memorial (10-7-2) have also had multiple victories so far.

The San Benito Lady Greyhounds will start District 32-6A play at Brownsville Hanna on Friday.

They take on a Lady Eagles team that has struggled enough to produce a 6-11 record.

On the flip side, the Lady ‘Hounds enter their district opener with a 13-5-1 mark.

SBHS has played only one game in March. It resulted in a commanding 4-0 victory, with the latest victim being the Zapata Lady Hawks.

In that game, SBHS scored a few runs in the fourth and fifth innings, while recording seven hits.

When comparing wins and losses against their foes this pre-district, the Brownsville Veterans Memorial Lady Chargers are 15-5-2, and the Harlingen Lady Cardinals are 11-10-1.
