The Point Isabel Independent School District Board of Trustees approved campus improvement efforts and facility work during its March board meeting and public hearing.
One of the key agenda items included approval of a local improvement plan for Garriga Elementary School for the 2025–2026 school year, which administrators say is focused on strengthening student performance through targeted instruction, additional tutoring and data-driven strategies.
District administrators said the campus has been working closely with Region One Education Service Center to analyze student performance and refine instructional strategies.
“We’ve been meeting consistently with Region One and reviewing all of our data, benchmarks and classroom strategies,” administrators told the board during the presentation.
According to district officials, recent data shows many students are close to reaching higher achievement levels on the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR) exams. In response, the campus plans to implement Saturday tutorial sessions ahead of each STAAR test.
“We received our latest data where students were only about three questions away from moving from approaches to masters,” administrators explained.
The district has also begun weekly training sessions with Region One specialists focused on strategies to support special education students. Teachers are also participating in additional professional development and curriculum planning sessions.
District leadership said campuses have also been given additional funding through grant allocations to support instructional needs, including tutoring, teacher planning time, instructional materials and summer curriculum development.
Superintendent officials told trustees the district reviewed existing grant funds and reallocated unused money to ensure campuses could maximize resources before the end of the school year.
“We don’t want to leave any money on the table,” administrators said. “We’re giving campuses autonomy to determine what their students and teachers need most.”
The board unanimously approved the improvement plan following the presentation.
Trustees also approved $27,227.80 in completed construction work related to improvements at the district administration building and security upgrades at the high school. Officials said the work had already been completed and remains within the project budget.
Following the regular agenda items, the board entered closed executive session to consult with legal counsel regarding potential taxable value limitation agreements related to energy and technology development applications, as well as personnel matters and employee contract considerations.
