LOS INDIOS, TX — A new mayor and commissioner have assumed leadership in this small river community.
According to Los Indios City Manager Jared Hockema, Anita Weaver has been both appointed and elected mayor for the remainder of Jaime Gonzalez’s term. Gonzalez recently stepped down from the position. His term runs through May 2027.
Hockema stated that Weaver was unopposed in the special election for mayor.
Since no other candidates filed, the election was canceled, and Weaver was declared the winner in accordance with state election procedures.
She was also appointed to serve during the interim period from March 16 until the originally scheduled May 2 election date.
Weaver was sworn in as mayor on March 16 and will be sworn in again after May 2 to start the elected portion of the term.
Hockema said the mayoral vacancy was created when former Mayor Jaime Gonzales resigned due to work commitments.
Weaver’s move to the mayor’s office created a vacancy in Alderman Place 3, which she occupied. Hockema confirmed that Salvador Mendoza has also been both appointed and elected to that position.
Mendoza was unopposed in the general election for Alderman Place 3. That election was also scheduled for May 2.
Since all candidates ran unopposed, the election was canceled, and the candidates were declared winners.
Mendoza was appointed to finish Weaver’s remaining term, which runs through May 2026, and will then serve a full term until May 2028.
Hockema said Mendoza, like Weaver, was sworn in on March 16 and will be sworn in again in May to begin his elected term.
The leadership changes occurred after the mayor resigned, leaving two open seats on the commission.
