A Selena-themed celebration is set for Thursday, April 16, from 4 to 6 p.m. at Pelican Station in Port Isabel, honoring the life and legacy of the late singer Selena Quintanilla-Pérez as part of Selena Day in Texas.
The two-hour event promises a full tribute to the Queen of Tejano music, featuring a DJ playing exclusively Selena’s hits, from “Como La Flor” to “Bidi Bidi Bom Bom.” Attendees can enjoy themed decorations, purple décor—the color most associated with Selena—and cupcakes designed in tribute to the singer’s iconic style. A costume contest will also give fans the chance to dress as Selena, whether it’s her signature stage outfits, sparkling jumpsuits, or casual fan-inspired looks.
Pelican Station will offer happy hour specials during the event, including $3 lime margaritas on the rocks and $5 flavored margaritas on the rocks, as well as well drinks and house wines. The festive atmosphere is designed to bring together fans of all ages to celebrate Selena’s enduring impact on music and culture.
Selena Quintanilla-Pérez, born in Lake Jackson, Texas, on April 16, 1971, was a trailblazer in Tejano music and became a beloved cultural icon. Known as the “Queen of Tejano,” she achieved crossover success in both Spanish and English music markets before her tragic death in 1995 at age 23. Her connection to Texas runs deep—she grew up performing with her family band, Selena y Los Dinos, in Corpus Christi and throughout South Texas, eventually earning a devoted following across the state and beyond.
Selena Day was officially recognized in Texas in 1995 by then-Gov. George W. Bush shortly after her death, cementing April 16 as a day to celebrate her music, influence, and legacy. Across the state, fans gather each year to honor her life, from concerts and karaoke events to cultural festivals and museum exhibits.
The Port Isabel event is open to the public and is expected to draw local residents, tourists, and fans of Selena’s music. Organizers hope to create an atmosphere that celebrates her Texas roots, her rise as a pioneering Latina artist, and her continuing influence on generations of musicians and fans.
