This past Saturday, May 2 the Port Isabel Sirens hosted the RGV Lady Pumas in full-contact football game.

Entering the matchup, the undefeated Lady Pumas were coming off a BYE week, but in the prior week they had a big 26-19 win over Brownsville Sting. Meanwhile, the Sirens lost to the Harlingen Black Widows 26-8 in a game where Elyssa Guerra scored the lone touchdown and Wuendi Flores scored a safety.

It didn’t take long for the Lady Pumas to flex their muscles as they intercepted the ball on the Sirens first offensive drive. Deep within Siren’s territory they quickly scored on a run play to go up 7-0.

After forcing the Sirens to turn the ball over on downs, the Lady Pumas scored again at the top of the second quarter and now led 14-0.

The Lady Pumas added another score, a 17-yard TD reception right before the half.

The second half was more of the same, but with most of the Siren players playing both ways, more fatigue set in, allowing the Lady Pumas to extend their lead. As the game came to a close, the Lady Pumas walked away with a 40-0 win.

Despite facing a deeper roster and a size advantage, the Sirens continued to battle in the physical, hard-fought contest, efforts appreciated by Sirens’ head coach John Horner.

“I am proud of my team every day. They are still learning and playing the game every week against veterans and always being out numbered. Each player has gotten better with each practice. They all really love the sport. They have heart and see and appreciate the mission we are striving for. It is always tough being out numbered 2 or 3 to 1 on players.” Said coach Horner. “Moving forward we will continue to focus on technique and proper form with some added endurance workouts. We have practices Tuesday and Thursday 6-8 p.m. at Roloff park. We invite anyone out to join in or watch.”

Up next for the Sirens is a road game against Brownsville Sting on Saturday, May 9. Meanwhile, the Lady Pumas and Black Widows will be enjoying their BYE week.

Participating in their in inaugural season, the Sirens are part of the So-Tex Women’s Athletic 4-team league along with the Brownsville Sting, RGV Lady Pumas and Harlingen Black Widows.
