BROWNSVILLE, TX —In honor of Military Appreciation Month in May, Cameron County officials unveiled permanent parking spaces reserved for veterans at County facilities.
The initial dedication ceremony was held on the morning of May 1, 2026, at the Cameron County Judicial Courthouse, 974 E. Harrison St., Brownsville.
In total, the County designated 20 permanent veteran-dedicated parking spaces across eight Cameron County facilities, including the Cameron County Judicial Courthouse, 974 E. Harrison St., Brownsville; the Cameron County Dancy Courthouse, 1100 E. Monroe St., Brownsville, TX; the San Benito Annex Building, 1390 W. Expressway 83, San Benito; the Port Isabel Annex Building, 505 Hwy 100, Port Isabel; the Los Fresnos Annex Building, 745 W. Ocean Blvd., Los Fresnos, TX; the La Feria Annex Building, 200 Industrial Way, La Feria, TX; the Harlingen Annex Building, 3302 Wilson Rd., Harlingen, TX; and the Levee Street Building, 835 E. Levee St., Brownsville, TX.
According to a statement from the Cameron County Commissioners’ Court, this initiative reflects the County’s commitment to ensuring that veterans feel recognized, valued, and appreciated for their service.
“This is a small token of our gratitude honoring the sacrifice and service of the men and women who have worn the uniform,” said County Judge Eddie Treviño, Jr. “These parking spaces will ensure that veterans can tangibly see Cameron County’s appreciation for them.”
“As a Marine Corps veteran, I appreciate the steps being taken to ensure that fellow veterans feel respected,” said Commissioner Gus Ruiz. “Providing parking spaces closer to building entrances is especially meaningful, given that mobility challenges are a common concern among many veterans.”
Subsequent veteran-dedicated parking spaces were completed by the Cameron County Maintenance Department at the locations listed above throughout May, in recognition of Military Appreciation Month.
According to statistics, there are approximately 12,500 to 17,500 veterans living in Cameron County, representing about 4% of the county’s population.
Because exact numbers vary by reporting agency and collection methodology, local and federal data produce different estimates.
The U.S. Census Bureau estimates that there are 12,584 veterans in the county (about 11,900 male and 980 female).
Local officials estimate that the county is home to roughly 17,500 veterans.
The Cameron County Veterans Service Office reports serving nearly 10,000 registered veterans in the local area.
