The event offers free entry for children ages 17 and younger, with prizes for the biggest catches. Families from South Padre Island, Port Isabel, Brownsville and surrounding Rio Grande Valley communities are welcome, along with visitors to the island.
When asked what inspired him to host the first Kids Fishing Contest, Clayton Brashear, owner of Clayton’s Pier, emphasized the importance of bringing families and the community together.
“We believe in bringing families and our community together,” Brashear explained. “We wanted to create something special for the children of South Padre Island and the surrounding communities, giving them the opportunity to experience the excitement of fishing, enjoy the outdoors, and make unforgettable memories with their families.”
Although participants will compete to catch the biggest fish, Brashear emphasized that the experience is about more than winning.
“It’s not about catching the biggest fish or winning a prize. It’s about having fun, learning something new, spending quality time with loved ones, and enjoying our beautiful island,” he shared.
Contestants must bring their own fishing poles and bait, with a maximum of two poles permitted per child. Every child must be accompanied by an adult. First-, second- and third-place prizes will be awarded, with specific prizes to be confirmed before the event.
Organizers have also expanded one of the event’s giveaways. Originally planned for the first 25 participants, complimentary hot dogs and drinks will now be provided to the first 50 registered children.
Sponsors include Ben E. Keith, Gabriella’s Restaurant and T-9 Sports. Nearby hotels, including Hilton Garden Inn, Sand Rose Beach Resort and Courtyard by Marriott, are offering discounted weekend accommodations.
Families are encouraged to bring sunscreen, hats, comfortable clothing and chairs. Free parking will be available.
Brashear hopes the inaugural contest will be the beginning of additional family-oriented activities throughout the year.
“We want Clayton’s Pier to be more than just a fishing destination,” Brashear added. “We want it to be a place where families come together, children experience new adventures, and our community feels welcome.”
