A former substitute teacher at Point Isabel Independent School District has been sentenced to 30 years in prison after pleading guilty to multiple felony charges related to child sexual abuse material.
Leif Ericson Varnum, who previously worked as a substitute within the district, was arrested in September 2024 on charges of indecency with a child and invasive video recording. According to a statement released Monday by Point Isabel ISD, Varnum pleaded guilty on Feb. 23, 2026, to 21 felony counts related to child sexual abuse material and additional offenses. District officials noted that the additional offenses did not occur during his employment with the district.
The district stated that it first became aware of the allegations at the time of Varnum’s arrest in September 2024. Upon notification of the charges, officials said he was immediately terminated and has not been employed by or affiliated with Point Isabel ISD since that date.
In recent days, questions have circulated within the community alleging that the district may have had prior knowledge of inappropriate behavior and allowed Varnum to continue working.
In response to those concerns, district officials said in an email to the PRESS, they had no prior reports or documented complaints regarding inappropriate conduct by Varnum before his arrest.
“To be clear: the district did not have prior knowledge of any inappropriate behavior by Mr. Leif Ericson Varnum before his arrest in September 2024,” the district said in a written response to inquiries. “At no time prior to his arrest did the district receive reports, complaints, or documented concerns alleging inappropriate conduct toward students. Had such information been reported, the district would have acted promptly in accordance with mandatory reporting laws and district policy.”
The district further stated that any claims suggesting administrators were aware of prior misconduct and allowed him to return to work are not accurate based on district records.
Since the case first arose, Point Isabel ISD said it has reviewed and strengthened safety measures, including enhanced employee screening procedures, more rigorous substitute onboarding protocols, ongoing staff training on mandated reporting responsibilities, and clearly defined reporting pathways for students and parents. The district also emphasized that it maintains comprehensive background check requirements and works closely with law enforcement whenever concerns are brought forward.
Point Isabel ISD expressed appreciation to the Cameron County District Attorney’s Office and local law enforcement agencies for their work in the case, calling their efforts diligent and committed to protecting children and pursuing justice.
District officials said the safety, dignity and well-being of students remain their highest priorities and that they remain committed to transparency and accountability in maintaining secure learning environments.
