As March begins, San Benito High School soccer teams aim to secure a spot in the postseason.

Both the boys’ and girls’ teams started the second round of their district schedules in late February.

The Greyhounds, going into Tuesday, were in third place after earning important victories against the Harlingen Cardinals (score 3-1) and the Brownsville Hanna Eagles (score 8-0).

The ‘Hounds’ goal scorers against Harlingen were Jiovanni Najera (2) and Everardo Escobedo (1). SBHS led 1-0 at halftime.

The ‘Hounds’ goal scorers against Hanna were Francisco Barrientos 3, Najera 2, and one each by Antwoan Alegria, Diego Martinez, and Escobedo. SBHS led 5-0 at halftime.

The victories catapulted the ‘Hounds’ District 32-6A record to 3-2 behind foes they lost to last month – Brownsville Veterans Memorial (4-1 record) and Fresnos Falcons (3-1 record).

If the ‘Hounds win the district, it will be, in part, because they got revenge on these two equally superb teams.

SBHS still has Los Fresnos to play and face Veterans Memorial next week.

The ‘Hounds’ district final is on March 13 at Harlingen. The postseason starts a week later.

The ‘Hounds finished with a 10-5-1 record this season.

The Lady ‘Hounds, meanwhile, are just one or two wins away from qualifying for the District 32-6A postseason.

Entering Tuesday, SBHS was at the bottom of the district standings, tied with the Hanna Lady Eagles, whom they defeated in a district opener last month by a goal.

After that, scores became more important as they lost to Los Fresnos, 6-1; Veterans Memorial, 2-0; and Harlingen, 7-0.

SBHS recently secured a 6-1 victory, once again, against Hanna.

Mayeli Rodriguez scored a hat trick with three goals, followed by a goal each from Alexia Delgado, Madisann Murillo, and Camila Guajardo.

The Lady Cardinals are currently the district leaders, sitting perfectly at 5-0.

The Lady Chargers are second, and the Lady Falcons are just ahead of the Lady ‘Hounds.

SBHS has a 14-10-3 record this year.
