BROWNSVILLE, TX—Due to current weather and ground conditions, Cameron County is imposing a restriction on all burning of any ground debris.
County officials released a statement earlier this week announcing the measures.
Constituents are instructed not to burn leaves, grass, or any applicable brush material during the next 90 days or upon termination of this burn ban, according to the release.
This order is adopted under Local Government Code §352.081 and other applicable laws, as stated by County officials.
This order does not prohibit outdoor burning activities related to public health and safety that are authorized by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality for: (1) firefighter training; (2) public utility, natural gas pipeline, or mining operation; (3) planting or harvesting of agricultural crops; or (4) burns that are conducted by a prescribed burn manager certified under Natural Resources Code §153.048 and meet the standards of Natural Resources Code §153.047.
Failure to follow this instruction may result in enforcement action against violators, according to the release.
Those caught burning may face a Class C misdemeanor and be fined up to $500. Additionally, starting an illegal fire could lead to civil liability for any property damage caused by an uncontrolled fire, as stated in the release.
Questions regarding the burn ban can be directed to the Cameron County Emergency Management Fire Marshal’s Office at (956) 547-7000, Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
