Port Isabel Early College High School recently released the All-District recipients for both the boys’ and girls’ divisions.
The 32-4A All-District selections start off with Defensive Player of the Year honoree, Aidan “The Flash” Ramos. Anyone who watched Ramos play this season as a home or visiting fan could see his tenacity on defense. He had a penchant for outjumping defenders for rebounds, swiping the ball for steals and sticking to offensive players like a glove. And he did it with a relentless quickness from the opening tip to the final buzzer, an honor very much deserved.
Guard, Shiloh Galvan who was the team’s captain and main offensive weapon was selected 1st Team All-District (Unanimous). Galvan could score via a mid-range jumper, from beyond the arc, or run by defenders for the layup. He improved various aspects of his offensive game from the prior year, but most notably was his steadfast confidence. The PI offense ran through him, well deserved honor.
Other PIECHS honorees were, Elijah Alvarez (2nd Team All-District), Bryan Martinez (Honorable Mention), Willy Mosqueda (Honorable Mention), Grayson Estes (Honorable Mention), and Marcos Baldovinos (Honorable Mention).
The boys’ team (13-19 overall, 5-4 district) had a down year compared to the last few seasons, but look for them to bounce back next year as all the starters will be returning.
As far as the girls 32-4A All-District selections, Captain Precious Vasquez was named Co-Offensive Player of the Year. A 3-year starter, Vasquez led by hard work and determination.
Other PIECHS honorees were, Escarlet Urrutia (1st Team All-District), Layla Mata (2nd Team All-District), Raylinn Aguilera (All-Academic Team), and Mia Lopez (All-Academic Team).
The girls’ team (7-13 overall, 6-4 district) struggled early on, with only one win in their first seven games, but the young squad showed steady improvement and closed out their last seven games with a 4-3 record. Look for team to keep improving next season as all but Vasquez returns.
