The 5th Annual Superintendent Scholarship Fishing Tournament is scheduled for April 10–11 in South Padre Island, bringing anglers and community members together to support student scholarships in the Point Isabel Independent School District.

The event begins Friday, April 10, with a Captain’s Party from 6 to 10 p.m. at VIVA South Padre Island. The evening will include live music, silent and live auctions, and an opportunity for participants to review tournament rules. A ticketed concert will also take place, featuring performances by William Beckmann, Gary Hobbs and Brody Rivers.

Fishing activities will follow on Saturday, April 11, with anglers departing at 6 a.m. The tournament will conclude at 2 p.m., followed by weigh-ins and an awards presentation.

The tournament is hosted by VIVA South Padre Island and Jim’s Pier and it’s organized by Superintendent Teri Capistran, Chief Financial Officer Christy Gonzalez and Communications Specialist Juliette Gonzalez-Barajas. According to organizers, all funds raised go directly toward student scholarships.

“The 5th Annual Superintendent Scholarship Fishing Tournament represents the very best of our community, coming together to invest in the future of our students,” said Superintendent Teri Capistran. “As a district serving an economically disadvantaged community, we know that education is the greatest equalizer to break the cycle of poverty for generations of families.”

The tournament is open to participants of all experience levels. In addition to on-site activities, a virtual silent auction is available, allowing supporters to participate remotely through an online platform.

Organizers report that over the past four years, more than $320,000 has been awarded in scholarships to Port Isabel Early College High School seniors.

The deadline to enter the tournament is April 9. Additional information, registration details and access to the virtual auction are available at www.pi-isd.net.
