Teams face stiff competition at Meet of Champions – Port Isabel-South Padre Press

This past weekend, March 27-28, the Port Isabel ECHS track teams competed in the Meet of Champions track meet. The annual two-day event featured a whopping 54 RGV schools from all classes.   

The lone male competitor from PIECHS was Aidan Ramos who came in 21st place in the 400 Meter Dash Prelims with a time of 57.60 seconds. 

Meanwhile In the girls’ division, Elle Wall finished in 10th place in the 200 Meter Dash Prelims with a time of 26.49 seconds. 

In the 800 Meter Run Finals, Lizbeth Perez came in 16th place with a time of 2:31.77 minutes. 

In the 100 Meter Hurdles Prelims, Layla Mata finished in 4th place with a time of 16.12 seconds and Wall came in 28th with a time of 23.49s. Mata then finished in 5th place in the finals with a time of 16.78s.

Mata followed up by coming in 4th place in the 300 Meter Hurdles Finals with a time of 47.76 seconds (47.58s prelims). Also in prelims, Madilynn Zamaron finished in 26th place with a time of 55.46s. 

In the 4×100 Meter Relay Prelims, the PI team finished in 24th place with a time of 53.52 seconds. 

In the 4×400 Relay Prelims, the PI team finished in 10th place with a time of 4:16.85 minutes. 

In the field events, Wall was the grand champion in the High Jump after achieving a 5’-6” jump height in the finals. 

In the Long Jump Finals, Wall came in 4th place with a distance of 16’-7.00”, while Mata came in 14th with a distance of 15’-6.75”.

In the Triple Jump Finals, sophomore Isabel Ochoa came in 27th place with a distance of 29’-11.00”. 

In the Shot Put event, Escarlet Urrutia came in 9th place with a distance of 33’-0.75”, and Precious Vasquez came in 27th with a distance of 29’-2.00”. 

Urrutia also came in 23rd in the Discus Finals with a distance of 96’-6.00”. 

The PI track teams next competition will take place during the District Meet held at La Feria HS on April 8-9.
