Edcouch man drowns Sunday at South Padre Island

A 49-year-old Edcouch man drowned Sunday afternoon after swimming at Cameron County Beach Access No. 5.

The Cameron County Park Rangers identified him as Matthew J. Shaw.

In a news release, authorities said the Park Rangers were dispatched to one mile north of the beach access at approximately 5:05 p.m. for an unresponsive man who had been pulled from the water.

Park Rangers and Cameron County Beach Patrol personnel immediately initiated life-saving measures.

Shaw was transported to Valley Regional Medical Center in Brownsville where he was pronounced dead.

The incident remains under investigation.
